With free forms and aspheres high quality optical systems can be realised that are much more compact than systems based on spherical components. A further disruptive improvement of optical systems can be achieved using graded index (GRIN) materials. Recently several new methods have been developed to make refractive index profiles with arbitrary position dependence. To be able to incorporate very promising GRIN based components, new optical design methods are to be developed.
